AMERICA HONOURS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
America has honored Martin Luther King Jr. with a federal holiday for nearly four decades. King, gunned down in Memphis in 1968 as he advocated for better pay and working conditions for the city’s sanitation workers, would have celebrated his 94th birthday Sunday.
Elsewhere in Washington, Martin Luther King III attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the national memorial to his father.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman and person of color to hold the office, spoke to volunteers at a day of service project at George Washington University.
Thousands attended a memorial march in San Antonio.
In Los Angeles, the Kingdom Day Parade returned after a two-year pandemic break.
On Monday, US President Joe Biden marked the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as he adopted a fighting stance against proposals floated by Republicans who control the House.
Gearing up for an expected announcement in the weeks ahead that he will run for a second, four-year term in 2024, Biden offered the sketches of an initial pitch to voters at an MLK breakfast organised by civil rights advocate Al Sharpton’s National Action Network.
