On Wednesday morning, India recorded the highest number of infections in one day with 1,15,736 new COVID-19 cases. The single-day rise in coronavirus cases breached the 1-lakh mark for the second time in three days. The country’s tally of confirmed cases stands at 1,28,01,785. The death toll increased to 1,66,177, with 630 new fatalities.
The active caseload registered an increase for the 28th day in a row and was recorded at 8,43,473, comprising 6.59% of the total infections.
Across the world, there have now been over 132 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. According to Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll due to COVID-19 stands at 2,871,786.
The US has recorded 30,846,396 confirmed cases of COVID-19 while Brazil is in second place with 13,100,580 cases, followed by India (12,686,049). The US has also recorded the highest death toll, with 556,509 fatalities so far. The death toll has also been high in Brazil (336,947), Mexico (204,985), and India (165,547).
India kicked off the “world’s largest” vaccination program on January 16, to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control. Public health authorities hope to inoculate 300 million high-risk people over the next six to eight months. The first to get the vaccine will be 30 million health and other frontline workers, followed by about 270 million people aged over 50 or deemed high-risk.
Two vaccine candidates ‒ the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine candidate known as Covishield in India and Covaxin, indigenously developed by Hyderabad-based company Bharat Biotech together with the Indian Council of Medical Research – are being given to beneficiaries.
The second phase of the vaccine rollout began On March 1, allowing people above the age of 60 and those above 45 with comorbidities to receive shots of the vaccine candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the first dose of Covaxin shot on March 1, and encouraged others to take the vaccine.
In total, more than 8.70 crore doses have been administered as of Wednesday morning, according to the Union health ministry.
Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 55,469 fresh coronavirus positive cases, the second-highest spike in the last two days, taking the tally of infections to 31,13,354while 297 deaths pushed the toll to 56,330, the state health department said.
Maharashtra is now left with 4,72,283 active cases.
Mumbai recorded 10,040 new cases and 32 deaths.
At the same time, 34,256 people were discharged on Tuesday, taking the count of the recoveries in the state to 25,83,331, the department said in a release.
The state’srecovery rate now stands at 82.98% and the fatality rate is 1.81%.
Maharashtra had reported the highest spike in daily cases on Sunday, when it added over 57,000 infections.
With 2,01,693 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra has gone up to 2,09,17,486, it said.

The national capital recorded 5,100 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest since November 27 last year when the city reported 5,482 cases in a day.
Seventeen more fatalities due to the infection took the death toll to 11,113, according to the Delhi health department.
The case positivity rate stands at 4.93% amid a massive surge in coronavirus cases in the last few weeks.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the AAP government is alert on the pandemic situation and keeping a “close watch” on it.
Interacting with reporters, he said over 12 lakh people have been vaccinated against the disease in Delhi till date.
The number of cumulative cases on Tuesday stood at 6,85,062, while over 6.56 lakh patients have recovered from the disease.
Delhi had reported 3,548 cases and 15 deaths on Monday, and 4,033 cases and 21 deaths on Sunday. The city had recorded 3,567 coronavirus cases on Saturday and 3,594 cases on Friday. On December 8 last year, the city had recorded 3,188 cases and 2,706 cases on December 6.
According to the latest health bulletin, 17 more people died due to the disease, taking the toll to 11,113.
