A lieutenant colonel of the Indian Army shot his wife dead before turning the gun on himself in Ferozepur cantonment on Sunday night.
Police said on Monday that the 44-year-old army officer shot his 42-year-old wife in the head at their house in Ferozepur cantonment at 9.15pm on Sunday.
“Later, he went to the unit’s quarter guard, prayed at a temple there and shot himself in the head, too,” police sources said.
When army officers tried to contact his wife at home to inform her about the step he had taken, no one answered the call, which prompted them to head to his house only to find her lying dead.
In a release, the army said that the officer had left behind a suicide note, admitting to shooting his wife over a marital dispute. The army public relations officer said that the couple were undergoing counselling.
While the officer belonged to Himachal Pradesh, his wife was from Dehradun in neighbouring Uttarakhand.
The bodies were taken to the Ferozepur civil hospital for post-mortem. The families of the officer and his wife were on their way to Ferozepur.
