Srinagar, July 18 : Grief and outrage have gripped north Kashmir’s Bandipora district after the tragic death of Zubair Ahmad Rather, a 35-year-old PhD scholar and father of three minor daughters, in a road accident earlier this week.
Zubair, a resident of Ajas in Bandipora, was critically injured after being hit by a vehicle near Zinpora village on Monday evening. He was initially rushed to Community Health Centre (CHC) Sumbal and later referred to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Zubair’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief among his relatives, friends, and academic colleagues. It has also raised strong calls for justice and financial assistance to his family, who are now left in a precarious situation.
He is survived by his wife and three young daughters besides mother and brothers. With Zubair being the sole breadwinner, his death has left the family shattered and economically vulnerable.
“He was the only source of income for the family. He lived a very modest life and struggled hard to complete his education. The government must step forward to support his wife and three daughters. Who will care for them now?” said one of his relatives, speaking to news agency KINS.
Zubair’s family lives in a small three-room house and is reportedly in deep shock over the tragic loss.
A senior district official, when contacted, said the administration is aware of the incident and open to helping the family. “If the family approaches us, we will see how best we can support them,” the official said.
Zubair had completed his PhD from the University of Kashmir. To support his family, he had recently begun teaching at a private academy in Ganderbal. His colleagues and teachers remember him as a humble, soft-spoken, and dedicated academic who came from a poor background but was driven by a strong passion for education and community service.
The incident has also drawn sharp political responses.
