“Transportation by rail will cut costs will boost development in Kashmir Valley”: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
Anantnag, Aug 9 : In a landmark moment for regional connectivity, the first-ever freight train from Rupnagar, Punjab, successfully arrived at the newly commissioned Anantnag Goods Shed on Saturday.
Details available with news agency reveal that the train, carrying 21 BCN wagons of cement, completed the nearly 600-kilometer journey in less than 18 hours. The cement will be used in vital infrastructure projects across the Valley, including roads, bridges, public facilities, and housing.
According to officials, the indent for the rake was placed with Northern Railway late on August 7, followed by swift loading at Gujarat Ambuja Cement Limited’s Rupnagar facility on August 8. The freight, hauled by a modern Electric WAG-9 locomotive, departed Punjab the same evening and reached Anantnag today, marking the first cement consignment specifically for the Goods Shed.
Authorities say this milestone is set to significantly accelerate development works and improve living standards, while also symbolizing deeper economic integration of the Valley with the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, In a post on X, Ministry of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw as per News Agency wrote, “First freight train to the Kashmir Valley: Today (9.8.2025) first freight train reached newly commissioned Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir Valley from Punjab, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir region to the national freight network. Transportation by railway network will reduce cost for our citizens living in Kashmir valley.”
