Srinagar, July 14, : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday lashed out at sections of the local press for what he called a “conscious and shameful silence” over the house detention of political leaders on July 13—Martyrs’ Day.
In a post on social media platform X, Omar expressed strong disappointment at the widespread media blackout around the incident. “Take a look at our local newspapers—both from Jammu and from Srinagar, English and vernacular,” he wrote. “You’ll be able to distinguish the cowards from the ones with guts.”
The Chief Minister claimed that most newspapers deliberately ignored the fact that the entire elected government, including himself, was placed under virtual arrest to prevent them from paying tribute at the Martyrs’ Graveyard. “The cowards have completely buried the fact,” he stated.
However, Omar reserved appreciation for a few publications that carried the story on their front pages. “The newspapers with some guts have put it on the front page. Shame on the sellouts who buried the story. I hope the size of the envelope was worth it,” he added, in a pointed dig suggesting media compromise. (CNS)
