Srinagar, being the smart city, houses an unnoticed place which is becoming a growing menace. The growing issue of waste management is becoming a nightmare for the residents of Soura, particularly in Achan, where a massive landfill has transformed a once-green area into a site of contamination and decay.
The Achan landfill loomed large over the outskirts of Soura, an intimidating sight with mountains of waste piled higher each day. The people in the nearby villages had grown used to the smell, but the effects on their lives were disgusting. Everyday, truckloads of garbage from Srinagar arrive to this site adding to the unending mix of plastic and rotting organic material.
Labels on the waste collection vans advertised “Biodegredable” and “Non biodegradable”, yet once inside the landfill, all waste gets dumped in the same place due to non working of Machines. The RDF conveyors intend to transform waste into fuel, had been out of commission for months, along with composting and segregation machines. The only machines still working are the Leachate processors, attempting to manage the toxic runoff. Yet untreated drainage water and Leachate spilled freely into the soil and water below contaminating fields that once produced vegetation.
The Trees around the landfill bore stained leaves, struggling against the toxic air and poisoned soil, while residents watched helplessly as their land slowly became barren.
Stories circulated the workers who had died on the job, leaving grieving families with no compensation or support. The authorities did little , never acknowledging these losses, and the families left behind struggled on, forgotten.
For those still working there, the dangers were constant. The non functional machinery was neglected, and the risk of collapse was always present and the Medical camps were very much rare. The residents and workers, plagued by respiratory issues and skin conditions, were left to endure the effects of their poisoned surroundings.
In this forgotten place, life is continuing under a cloud of neglect. The landfill is growing each day, a mountain of waste is absorbing the hopes and health of all who are living in this shadow. And still, the people of Soura are waiting, clinging to a faint hope that someday, someone would see their plight and finally care enough to act.
