New Delhi: The Delhi high court has directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide CCTV footage of the time when a 23-year-old undertrial prisoner was killed in his cell last year, allegedly by other inmates, according to the Indian Express.
In February, the court had come down heavily on the jail authorities about the killing, saying, “We see such things only in fiction.” The court also asked if any inquiry has been initiated against officials for the security lapse within the jail premises.
According to reports, the man who was killed, Dilsher Azad, was facing trial in four separate cases. He was attacked with knives by other inmates on November 30 inside Tihar Jail number 3. He was declared dead on arrival by a doctor at the jail dispensary and the police have registered a case against three prisoners.
The court is hearing a petition filed by Azad’s father Ali Sher, demanding compensation of Rs 5 crore.
According to the Indian Express, the court was informed by jail authorities that Azad was attacked by undertrial prisoners Ved Prakash, Naushad, and Faizal Alam “with handmade improvised sharp-edged object”. In an order passed earlier this month, the court observed that the status report about what the footage contains is unclear and it is also not known whether the same has been submitted to the investigating officer.
