JAMMU, JUNE 04: NCC Cadets of Government College for Woman Gandhi Nagar today celebrated World Environment Day.

The main idea behind celebrating World Environment Day was to highlight the importance of the environment and to remind the cadets that nature should not be taken for granted. The Environment Day was celebrated with enthusiasm, wherein various activities were designed for NCC cadets to perform from their homes thus keeping them aware of the environmental issues.

Looking at ways to reduce the number of things people throw away, and be a little kinder to the environment, the Cadets of 1 J&K Naval unit under the guidance of Sub. Lt. Dr. Neelima G participated in an online competition ‘Upcycling of unused products to create useful items’ and pledged to reduce the amount of waste one produces by embracing up cycling as a way of life.

The cadets prepared various articles of use from old plastic bottles, clothes, newspapers,s and broken things to make beautiful decorative items.

The cadets also participated in an online poster-making competition on ‘Save Environment’ and planting of medicinal saplings at their homes to sensitize them to the issues of climate change and deterioration of natural resources.

Parul Sharma, B.A. Sem 2; Preeti Sharma, B.A. Sem 4 and Riya Sharma, B.A. Sem 4 was adjudged as first, second, and third, respectively in the upcycling competition.

Avneet Kour, B.Sc. Sem 2; Preeti Sharma, B.A. Sem 4 and Aditi Sharma, B.A. Sem 4 were declared as first, second, and third respectively in the poster-making competition, while 1st place went to Janvi Jamwal of B.Sc. Sem 4; 2nd to Janvi Sharma, B.Sc. Sem 4 and 3rd place to Parul Sharma, B.A. Sem 2 in the planting of medicinal saplings category.

Giving importance to environmental issues Cadets of 1J&K Girls Bn under the supervision of ANO Lt. Dr. Revika Arora participated in an online ‘Photography competition’ on the theme “Time for nature’.

The competition received an overwhelming response, wherein 83 entries of beautiful photographs of nature were received. The cadets depicted the various forms of nature through their photographs displaying natural elements such as landscapes, domestic animals, plants, and close-ups of natural scenes and textures.

The first position was bagged by cadet Shristi Rai, the second position by Avni Dutta and the third position was shared by Bhumika Sharma and Tina. Consolation prizes were also awarded to cadets Shriya Sharma, Meenakshi Basan, and Reena Kumari.

The principal of the college, Dr. Sangita Nagari expressed delight to see the cadets participate in such large numbers through online activities during sensitive times. She said that the protection of the environment is the responsibility of all and the college is at the forefront of conducting many activities for environmental protection.

The students were inspired and motivated to plant more trees in and around their own surroundings contributing to a healthier and cleaner society which in turn will make a greener Earth
