Kupwara:30th December 2024: Nehru Yuva Kendra Kupwara, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Government of India organized an awareness and Education Programme on Drug Addiction and substance abuse at Alexander High Secondary School Kupwara.


The country faces a serious challenge the increasing prevalence of drug addiction and substance abuse among its youth. This addiction not only impacts their physical health and mental well-being but also jeopardizes their future opportunities. Several factors contribute to this vulnerability, including peer pressure, academic stress, and the rapid transformations within society said Mr Rahi Riyaz Ahmed TOT Kashmir NYKS in his speech. Mr Rahi further said that to tackle this issue effectively, a multi-faceted approach is necessary and there is an urgent need to work towards awareness programmes at large in this direction to prevent the menace of drug abuse and identification at an early stage. Targeted awareness and education programs can equip young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions. Additionally, fostering community engagement creates a supportive environment where help is readily available.


Principal Alexander High Secondary School, Mr Mohammed Maqbool, said, the teachings and guidance of religious scholars and elders of the society, can inspire individuals to lead virtuous lives and steer clear of destructive behaviors such as substance abuse. “By emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility, self-discipline, and compassion, religious leaders play a crucial role in preventing drug abuse and supporting those affected

Addressing the participants, Dr Hilal Ahmad Bhat asked the youth to stay away from the menace of drug abuse. “In recent years, substance abuse has emerged as a pressing issue, posing significant challenges to the well-being and prosperity of our country, which has the largest youth population. The youth, being the most vulnerable, are disproportionately affected by this scourge. However, a disciplined lifestyle will be extremely helpful in combating the growing drug menace. She added that the youth should also possess the passion, energy, and idealism to drive positive change and create a drug-free society.
Dr Naseer State Coordintor National Tabasco Control Programme (DHSK) discussed different forms of drug and substance abuses and shared the data about the increasing number of cases everyday, from across the Jammu and Kashmir.
