MeT Issues Warning For Thunderstorm With Lightning In Kashmir, Jammu Parts

Srinagar, April 22 (GNS): Rains continued to lash Kashmir Valley while upper reaches including the world-famous skiing resort of Gulmarg received snowfall, officials said on Thursday.

A meteorological department official told GNS that Srinagar received 4.2 mm of rain in the last 24 hours till 0830 a.m. while it recorded a low of 8.6°C against 10.4°C on the previous night. It was 0.3°C below normal in the summer capital of J&K for this time of the season.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, received 0.2mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 4.6°C against the previous night’s 7.4°C, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, received 0.9mm of rain and recorded a low of 3.3°C against 5.3°C on the previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, received 1.0mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of 3.7°C against the previous night’s 5.8°C, the official said.

Kupwara had 11.8 mm of rain and recorded a low of 5.0°C against 7.7°C on the previous night, the official said. Reports said Sadnatop received 5 inches of fresh snow along with Karnah, Kieran, and Z Gali in Machil in the north Kashmir district.

Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, received 6.8mm of rain and 2cms of snowfall while it recorded a low of minus 0.5°C against 1.4°C on the previous night, the official said. Reports of snowfall have been also received from Kulan, Gund, and Sonamarg areas of Ganderbal district in central Kashmir besides Drass and Leh in Ladakh.

Director Meteorological department Sonam Lotus said rain and thunderstorm at many places of J&K and snowfall over higher reaches of Kashmir and Drass -Zojila area is likely to continue till Thursday evening.

“There is high probability of thunderstorms with lightning at most parts of Kashmir, Ramban-Banihal, Poonch -Rajouri Area during next few hours,” he said.

He said from April 23, the weather is most likely to remain dry in both regions till the end of the month. (GNS)
